That is where commissioning and critical-power leadership becomes one of the most consequential parts of major infrastructure delivery.
Opportunity market
Critical Power & Commissioning
Indicative UK base £80k–£160k
Critical infrastructure only becomes valuable when somebody can prove that every important system actually works.
The work
What these roles usually involve.
You could be taking responsibility for energising a data-centre campus, directing integrated systems testing, bringing major electrical and mechanical systems online, resolving complex failures or deciding whether a facility is genuinely ready to enter operation.
The scale can be enormous. Modern mission-critical projects may involve tens or hundreds of megawatts of power, multiple buildings, complex redundancy, specialist vendors, major contractors and systems that cannot simply fail once they are live.
That creates a very different kind of role. Problems appear when disciplines intersect, programmes tighten and systems are tested under real operating conditions. Senior commissioning people are often the ones expected to understand what is happening, make the call and get the project safely through it.
Career impact
What successful contribution can look like.
Success can mean safely energising major infrastructure, solving failures during IST, recovering a delayed commissioning programme, achieving operational readiness or handing over a facility that performs exactly as designed from its first day in service.
Relevant experience commonly combines electrical or mechanical systems knowledge with commissioning strategy, testing, energisation, systems integration, programme coordination, technical leadership and strong operational judgement.
Typical opportunities include Commissioning Director, Senior Commissioning Manager, Commissioning Lead and Electrical Delivery or Operational Readiness leadership.
Indicative UK base salaries range from around £80k to £160k, with major programmes, international assignments, rotations and allowances capable of producing materially larger total packages.
Career progression can lead into commissioning directorship, major-programme leadership, regional or global mission-critical delivery and senior operational or technical leadership.
