That is where commissioning and critical-power leadership becomes one of the most consequential parts of major infrastructure delivery.
Role opportunity profile
Commissioning Director
Indicative UK base £120k–£160k
Commissioning Directors own strategy, governance, vendors, quality, reporting and readiness across major or multi-site programmes. Strong profiles show MW, campus or portfolio scale, standards, team and vendor scope, RFS or handover, programme governance and client escalation authority.
The work
What work at this level can involve.
You could be taking responsibility for energising a data-centre campus, directing integrated systems testing, bringing major electrical and mechanical systems online, resolving complex failures or deciding whether a facility is genuinely ready to enter operation.
The scale can be enormous. Modern mission-critical projects may involve tens or hundreds of megawatts of power, multiple buildings, complex redundancy, specialist vendors, major contractors and systems that cannot simply fail once they are live.
That creates a very different kind of role. Problems appear when disciplines intersect, programmes tighten and systems are tested under real operating conditions. Senior commissioning people are often the ones expected to understand what is happening, make the call and get the project safely through it.
Career impact
What successful contribution can look like.
Success can mean safely energising major infrastructure, solving failures during IST, recovering a delayed commissioning programme, achieving operational readiness or handing over a facility that performs exactly as designed from its first day in service.
Relevant experience commonly combines electrical or mechanical systems knowledge with commissioning strategy, testing, energisation, systems integration, programme coordination, technical leadership and strong operational judgement.
